Listening Skills
Foundations
- I will go to class.
- I will not talk to my neighbors
while the teacher is talking.
- I will not write notes, rhymes,
or any other verbal activity while I am supposed to be listening.
- I will quit repeating negative
thoughts to myself.
Basics
- I will sit up straight and look
up, with my materials out in front of me.
- I will not pay attention to any
neighbors that are talking.
- I will take notes on any
presentation the teacher is giving.
- I will try to think positive
thoughts about the class and subject matter I am in.
- I will jot down questions and
items I understand to ask at the end of the presentation.
- I will try to discern main ideas
from examples, details.
- I will try to imagine what I am
hearing in an attempt to picture it in my mind.
- I will think about how
information I am learning relates to information I already know.
Advanced
- I will ask any neighbors who are
talking inappropriately to save their conversations for outside of class.
- I will try to predict possible
test or quiz questions for later review.
- I will use vivid mental pictures
and other mnemonics to solidify the information in my memory.
- I will think critically and come
up with my own ideas while I am listening.
